HANDS-ON WITH SPECIAL ED LEARNERS OF ENGLISH
Special education is an important part of today’s Croatian educational system. Experts agree that there is a whole range of special learning styles and/or disorders which have become an integral part of a typical Croatian classroom.
For teachers, special education most often means special adjustments in their usual teaching approaches, materials and methods. Sometimes this presents a challenge for teachers as the adjustment of material, teaching methods and strategies requires skills and resources that are perceived to fall beyond the scope of standard lesson planning. Teachers often lack concrete and applicable strategies they could employ in the adjustment of the standard material to better address the needs of their special educational needs students.
Therefore, the objective of this workshop is to present some concrete strategies of adjusting the curricular content. We hope that the examples shown and the handouts given will encourage the participants to be even more resourceful and creative in the planning of their lessons for special education learners.
ANIMATED FILMS IN ELT
In this workshop I will present several ideas on how animated films can be used in teaching English. Regardless of age, almost everybody likes to watch a good cartoon/animated film. Younger learners enjoy watching cartoons and are emo!onally engaged, which sparks their interest in the follow-up ac!vi!es. Since modern animated films are targeted at both children and their parents, our teenage students do not have a feeling they are analysing something childish. On the contrary, they can recognize irony, detect humour and some references to the adult world, which children cannot.
That is a good mo!va!on factor, so students are ready to communicate and discuss various characters, rela!onships among them, their personal traits, as well as work on grammar and lexical structures, such as passive, comparison of adjec!ves, conjunc!ons, rela!ve clauses, etc.

animated lms are used in the workshop.
